Laked blood is subjected to at least three complete freeze-and-thaw cycles to fully lyse cells. Hemolyzed or laked horse blood is used in culture media and has been used for many years in Corynebacterium diphtheriae media, where better growth was observed after lysis of the horse blood by the tellurite in the medium.
