Hanks’ Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) is formulated to preserve the structural and physiological integrity of cells in vitro. Saline solutions like HBSS serve multiple purposes, including: – Acting as a transport, dilution, and irrigation solution to maintain intra- and extracellular osmotic balance – Providing an energy source for cellular metabolism when supplemented with a sugar such as glucose – Functioning as a buffering system to help maintain physiological pH levels (7.2–7.6). HBSS without calcium and magnesium is commonly used for washing and resuspending cells during dissociation procedures, as the absence of these ions prevents inhibition of enzymatic activity (e.g., trypsin). This specific formulation does not contain calcium or magnesium.

Signs of Deterioration:
Buffer solution should be clear and free of particulate and flocculent material.  Do not use if buffer solution is cloudy or contains precipitate.  Other evidence of deterioration may include colour change or degradation of physical or performance characteristics.
