Hanks’ Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) is formulated to preserve the structural and physiological integrity of cells in vitro. Saline solutions like HBSS serve multiple purposes, including: – Acting as a transport, dilution, and irrigation solution to maintain intra- and extracellular osmotic balance – Providing an energy source for cellular metabolism when supplemented with a sugar such as glucose – Functioning as a buffering system to help maintain physiological pH levels (7.2–7.6) The formulation of HBSS includes essential ions such as calcium and magnesium to support these roles and is without phenol red.
